Our Roundtable Discussion initiative was created in the Spring of 2019 to provide a new dimension to the legal research and discourse that the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review aims to promote. In Fall of 2020, CULR began its first collaborative Roundtable series with the Cambridge University Law Society’s Per Incuriam. In Spring 2021, CULR began collaborating on Roundtable with the Penn Undergraduate Law Journal (PULJ).

For each roundtable discussion, CULR staff writers are asked to respond to a prompt or issue from their own perspective. With various voices engaged in the discussion of a single legal issue, Roundtable highlights the multi-faceted nature of law in a digestible and accessible way.

Roundtable features original pieces written and edited by our Roundtable staff at Columbia. They are not representative of any views held by the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review Executive Board.

Roundtable #26 | Immigration and Trump’s Executive Orders

One of the most prominent policy changes of Donald Trump’s campaign for his second presidency centered around the mass deportation of immigrants illegally in the United States. After returning to office, he quickly went to work amending preexisting acts in order to accomplish his goal, and already deported almost 40,000 immigrants in his first month. The new administration’s aggressive policy reforms have sparked scrutiny throughout the country and are now under pressure from multiple legal challenges. So, the questions remain: why are deportations legal, and how do the Trump administration’s new efforts differ from the past? This article will examine the legal framework surrounding these new policies, the legal challenges they face, and the potential implications for the future of immigration law in the United States.

Roundtable #7 | Health Care for Undocumented Immigrants

U.S. legislative acts pertaining to health care rights have historically limited undocumented immigrants’ access to such benefits. While alternative paths to access are available at the moment, they are far from sufficient for undocumented immigrants seeking treatment. This Roundtable explores the existing healthcare rights of undocumented immigrants, barriers to further access, and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on these rights.
